Easter day

I have two thoughts for you this Easter season. I think both are valid for this time of year or indeed anytime we want to engage with the spiritual life. The first is about the value of stories and is particularly appropriate because we have been looking at Jesus’ stories during the Lent course. The second is about prayer and how to approach it.

In Jewish mythology there is the story of the teacher who gave his teaching only in parables and stories, which his disciples listened to with pleasure and occasional frustration. They clearly did not understand all that they were being told and sometimes they longed for something deeper and more complex. The rabbi was unmoved by their protestations and complaints. To all their objections he would say, "You have yet to understand my friends, that the shortest distance between a human being and a Truth is a story."

Another time he said "Do not despise a story just because it is simple. Many truths are at their heart very simple. A lost gold coin is found by means of a penny candle; the deepest truth is found by means of a simple story."

The truth at the heart of Easter could not be more simple – God Loves us.

-------------

We must never wait until we feel like praying before we pray for others. Prayer is like any other work; we may not feel like working, but once we have been at it for a bit, we begin to feel like working. We may not feel like practicing the piano, but once we play for a while, we feel like doing it. In the same way, our prayer muscles need to be limbered up a bit and once the blood-flow of intercession begins, we will find that we feel like praying.

Archbishop of Canterbury's prayer for Palestine

 God of Compassion and Justice,
We cry out to you for all who suffer in the Holy Land today.
For your precious children, Israelis and Palestinians,
Traumatised in fear for their lives;
Lord, have mercy.

For the families of the bereaved,
For those who have seen images they will never forget,
For those anxiously waiting for news, despairing with each passing day;
Lord, have mercy.

For young men and women,
heading into combat,
bearing the burden of what others have done and what they will be asked to do;
Lord, have mercy.

For civilians in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, that they would be protected and that every life would count and be cherished and remembered;
Lord, have mercy.

For the wounded, and those facing a lifetime of scars, for those desperately seeking medical treatment where there is none;
Lord, have mercy.

For medical and emergency personnel, risking their own lives to save those of others;
Lord, have mercy.

For those who cannot see anything but rage and violence, that you would surprise them with mercy, and turn their hearts towards kindness for their fellow human beings;
Lord, have mercy.

For people of peace, whose imagination is large enough to conceive of a different way, that they may speak, and act, and be heard;
Lord, have mercy.

Mighty and caring God, you promised that one day, swords will be beaten into ploughshares, meet us in our distress, and bring peace upon this troubled land.

Amen.

A message  from our branch of the MU.

January 30th 2021

Like all charities this year, it has been really hard for The Mothers Union to raise money for all the wonderful work they do here in the UK and Overseas.

As a Branch here in the Wriggle Valley we have been unable to do any of the fund raising we had planned for 2020 except we managed to have a cake stall outside St Andrew's Church, Yetminster after a service (when they were allowed!) and raised enough money to be able to send £120 to an Appeal called The Big Give.

Also, since Christmas, we have sent £50 to the Salisbury Refuge which is something we like to support, as obviously they have been through hard times too.

We look forward to being able to fund raise again this coming year and it would be so good if folk could come and support us, once we know what is going to be allowed.

Many thanks

Margaret and Anne

FAITH IN ACTION

2017 Programme

Tuesday February 7th 2017 7pm AGM at the Trim Room, Yetminster Jubilee Hall

Seven members of the Wriggle Valley Branch  of the MU met for the AGM. Apologies from 4 people had been received and a potential new member joined us as well. Margaret Shipman welcomed us and gave her report for 2016. Anne Reason  gave her treasurer's report: in spite of being such a small branch we had managed to raise £700 during 2016 to give to various MU charities.

Margaret Shipman was elected leader; Anne Reason Treasurer and the following agreed to be committee members: Valerie Rowsell, Jo Barlow-Poole and Barbara Driver. Frances Moule offered to continue to keep the database for the recipients of the Baptismal cards and to look after the MU page on the Three Valleys Team website and to print the programme. Some discussion took place about the programme which would include a couple of fund-raising events; 3 events in members' homes and a public event with a good speaker which would be advertised in good time. There would also be a children's event in August and a visit to the local Care Home in December.

WEDNESDAY August 9th MARY SUMNER DAY CELEBRATION. 10AM - 1PM.

The Mothers' Union members celebrated Mary Sumner Day on Wednesday 9th August by hosting a family fun morning at Leigh Church in conjunction with the Living Churchyard Project. The morning started with a lovely service which welcomed two new members to the Mothers' Union followed by activities led by the members and Philippa. We were not deterred by the weather, and everyone enjoyed collecting fir cones and sticks for the bugs to find happy homes in their new bug hotel and at the end of the nature trail sweet treats provided everyone with lots of energy to continue building the bug hotel or create some great pieces of artwork in the creative zone. The morning ended with an indoor picnic where everyone enjoyed a nice natter and catch-up with friends. Thank you to all the members of the MU and Leigh Church who contributed their time and talents to the morning.

A lively and amusing talk was given by Becky to members about her life as Chaplain to Sherborne School for Girls. She told us about old and new problems; pyjama prayers (with duvets!) and the ecumenical side of her work in a Christian school which has many children of other faiths as well.

By the end of the evening we all felt that the girls of SSG were very lucky to have Becky as their chaplain! Margaret Shipman presented her with flowers as a thank you.
